MOT big fail!

Post  Jimbo on Tue Jul 16, 2013 8:23 am

Well, MOT expires on the 20th, so I've just got round to putting her in to see what she failed on - turns out plenty Crying or Very sad

Lots of little rusty bits, got a Mini specialist chap who will do that for me at a decent price, a couple of wheel bearings, one front, one back, a track rod end and CV gaiter, and a load of niggly electrical stuff to do with the lights.

My question is this to my learned friends, are the wheel bearings and track rod end the same as a Mini by any chance? If not, where is the best (cheapest) place to get them? As this chap is a Mini guy, he has the parts in stock, if not, he is a bit scuppered, but I said I'd source the bits to save him time and money.

I've been looking on the bay and found the bits at reasonable prices -

Do these look right and are they the best price do you reckon? I'm properly skint at the moment, and need this bill like a hole in the head, but I'll be buggered if I'm not going to save the old girl for another year at least Very Happy

Good news is there's no brake issues etc.. it's all small stuff, but it does add up if you're not careful.

Cheers,
Jim

You've got to keep the old girl going for a few more years yet Very Happy Far to good to be turned into a fridge Sad At least there were no issues with the suspension as that could be expensive....

They do look like the right parts, although one bearing looks much like another in the pictures. Prices seem pretty good to. I've just orderd a pair (both sides) of rear wheel bearings from the owners club, plus set of contact breakers, condenser & rotor arm, posted was £45 total. They are Timken bearings Colin said so good quality ones Very Happy

Fairly sure Mini parts are different, for example that rear hub nut cage thingy won't fit a Mini, so stub axle is different diameter.  Not sure about track rod ends, worth a try first before ordering.

Whats the electrical stuff? Easy to sort?

Mind you welding and rusty bits are the stuff of my nightmares.......

Keep us posted.   Andy.

...a shot in the dark ...how much does the mot tester know about Allegro's? ...the bearings can be adjusted up a little bit both front and back, sometimes just a split pin out, turn in one flat of the nut, have a feel for play and that can sort it Wink

Yeah, Jamie is right. The rear wheel bearings should have quite a bit of play in them. When my MOT was being done he actually checked for play. He commented on fact that if there was no play it would wear them out double quick time. Only reason they would fail is if they were noisy and had excessive play. Front bearings are different and should not have play, however procedure says they should be torqued to 150 Lbs then ON to the next split pin hole. Worth a tinker Jim esp if the dosh is tight just now.

Keep us posted matey. Andy.
