Auto gearbox
Hi everyone!
I have just joined this site as I have an early VDP 1.5 in the garage and hope to get it back on the road this year. There is a problem with the 4 speed ap auto box (why I garaged it ten years ago...) and wondered if anyone could point me in direction of the fault before I get ripped off by gearbox specialists...
The car started to make a metallic grinding noise under load, quickly developed power loss up hills and finally all forward drive.
Could it be fluid flywheel or the torque converter? I know nothing about auto boxes but I like this one and would rather keep it than change the engine and box, especially as the engine is a peach.
Pleased to hear any replies.
Cheers

Re: Auto gearbox
Hm, I'm no expert with auto 'boxes but grinding sounds are usually a symbol of something having gone catastrophically wrong. Best get it assessed and weight up your options: You wouldn't need to change the engine & box, a recon box could be picked up quite cheap. If memory serves me right, the 1.5 was still an A series engine, so that was used in pretty much everything Leyland from the fifties through to the eighties. That been said, it could be a simple fix, but I wouldn't hold out much hope.
